The STTK Union for Students
The STTK Union for Students is a special body providing expert information and advice to students on employment issues and established by four trade unions which are affiliated members of STTK, Finnish Confederation of Professionals. These are Trade Union Suora; the Federation of Special Service and Clerical Employees ERTO; the Federation of Salaried Employees Pardia and the Union of Salaried Employees TU. The function of the Union for Students is to deliver information on the world of work to students and to promote their unionisation. At the same time the STTK affiliated unions will become better known in the various colleges and universities. The main focus group of the Union for Students consists of engineering and business administration students, who most likely will, after their graduation, find employment in a sector which is represented by STTK and which is covered by collective bargaining conducted by one of the four supporting trade unions.
The Union for Students offers information and training on those issues which are connected with the world of work and with employment. When a young person first enters employment, it is likely that he or she will be confronted with unfamiliar issues and situations and will not know the right thing to do. For example, how would one know that the employer is offering fair pay? Can one leave a job without warning? Should one receive some kind of compensation for overtime? The Union for Students can answer these questions and give information on numerous other employment related issues.
The Finnish Confederation of Professionals, STTK
The trade unions which support the Union for Students are affiliated members of the Finnish Confederation of Professionals STTK, which has 20 affiliated unions and a total of 650,000 individual members. STTK affiliated trade unions represent the interests of the employees who are engaged in their particular sector regardless of qualification, job or position of the employee. Background of the Union for Students and old members
The STTK Union for Students started operating in its current form early in 2007. However, the history of the Union for Students reaches back to 1999, when its activities first commenced. During the last few years the Union for Students has operated as the student branch of the Union of Salaried Employees, TU and until the end of the year 2006 it was possible for students to also join the Union for Students. Due to operative changes at the beginning of 2007, the old members of the Union for Students became student members of the Union of Salaried Employees.
